If you're flying

Connected via major airlines across the globe, Montréal is only an hour and a half from New York, two hours from Chicago, and six hours from London.

  Taxi and limousine

For rapid and convenient access to downtown Montréal, use the available taxi or limousine services. No reservation needed from Montréal Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau International Airport (formerly Dorval Airport). There is also shuttle bus service which links the airport to convenient connecting point in Montréal.

Visa, MasterCard and American Express are accepted. Some drivers accept American funds. However, provincial rules specify that clients must pay in Canadian dollars. The rates include taxes and are subject to change without notice.

Taxi : between $31 and $35 - Limousine $47.70.

Shuttle bus

L'Aérobus is the shuttle service from the Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau International airport to dowtown Aérobus Station. A complimentary shuttle service is also available between the Aérobus Station and major downtown hotels.

Tickets for the shuttle bus may be purchased from the bus driver.

One-way : $12 - Return: $21.75. All taxes are included. There is a shuttle bus every 30 minutes.

If you're driving

From New York:

  • Take Interstate 87 North (USA)

  • Once you pass customs, you are on Highway 15 North (Canada)

  • Follow the signs for the 10 West onto the Champlain Bridge

  • Keep right and follow the signs to exit 58 "Montréal Centre Ville/Downtown

From Vermont:

  • Take Interstate 89 North (USA)

  • Once you pass customs, you are on highway 133 North (Canada)

  • Stay on 133 North until the 35 North

  • Follow the 35 North which will lead you to highway 10 West

  • Follow the signs for the 10 West onto the Champlain Bridge

  • Keep right and follow the signs to exit 58 "Montréal Centre Ville/Downtown

Trains

Montréal's Gare Centrale, with rail connections from New York or Washington, is also a major stop for domestic trains from eastern or western Canada.

Useful Information
   
Currency

The official currency in Canada is the Canadian dollar, which is divided into 100 cents. Traveller's cheques are accepted in most major foreign currencies by banks, which are usually open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays. Currency exchange facilities are available at the Trudeau airport as well as in the Montréal downtown core.

   
Credit cards

American Express, Diners Club, Eurocard, Mastercard, Visa and other credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants and shops.

 

 

Taxes

Two sales taxes apply to most goods and services purchased in the Province of Québec: the federal GST of 7% plus the provincial tax TVQ at 7.5%, calculated on the total after GST. On certain items, including hotel rooms and goods being brought out of the country, visitors may be eligible to reclaim the GST. Specialty service points in dowtown shopping centres also offer tax refund options.

 

 

Tipping

Tipping is voluntary but expected. Gratuities are not automatically added to the bill. Typically waiters receive 15-20% of the bill, depending on level of service; taxi drivers, 10-15%; doormen, porters and skycaps,. $1 CA per bag.
