Jean-Louis Roux is a well-known actor, stage director, writer and arts
executive who has been a respected member of the Canadian theatre
community for more than 50 years. He has directed more than 50 plays and
has translated or adapted several works for the stage. In addition to more
than 100 stage roles in Canada and abroad, he has performed in over 50
television dramas, including La Famille Plouffe, and several films. He was
Secretary General (1953-1963) and Artistic Director (1966-1982) of the
Théâtre du Nouveau Monde in Montreal. From 1982 to 1987, he was Director
General of the National Theatre School of Canada.
Jean-Louis Roux has received the Canada Council for the Arts Molson Prize
(1977) as well as Quebec’s Densie-Pelletier Award for lifetime achievement
in the theatre. He is a Companion of the Order of Canada, a Chevalier de
l’Ordre du Québec and has received honorary doctorates from Université
Laval, Concordia University and the University of Ottawa. He has also
served as Senator (1994-96), Lieutenant-Governor of Quebec (1996-97) and
Chair of the Canada Council for the Arts (1998-2003).
